In ›Le Cri‹ Nacera Belaza, French dancer and choreographer of Algerian descent, and her sister, Dalila Belaza, present an hypnotic duet. Based on watching Sufi whirling dervishes renowned the world over, she frees this traditionally Islamic form of dance from all folkloristic elements and examines its pure movements using the criteria of contemporary dance. Whereas the dervishes enter a state of trance by moving in identical circles to religious songs, the dancing of Nacera and Dalila Belaza is accompanied by both eastern and western music: Larbi Bestam, Amy Winehouse, Nina Simone or arias sung by Maria Callas. ›Le Cri‹ won the French Critics’ Prize in the category Theatre, Music and Dance in 2008.
