During the residency at PACT, Alireza Mirmohammadi and Maryam Ghiasi worked together on ›Mangle‹.›Mangle‹, a collaboration between the two artists, is a performance that brings together contemporary dance and media art to explore the tension between imposed visibility and the desire for inner freedom. Through choreography, sound, and abstract videos, including elements of digital art, the piece follows a physical and emotional journey from external conformity toward layered inner complexity.

During my residency at PACT Zollverein, I explored sound as both a disruptive force and a cultural expression, drawing inspiration from the paredão de som phenomenon in Brazil’s favelas. These automotive sound systems, known for their extreme volume, became a lens to examine tensions between tradition, resistance, and noise. Collaborating with four dancers, we blended made-up folk dances with Brazilian funk and dynamic choreography, using movement and sound to challenge ideas of belonging, cultural identity, and appropriation.

Während der Residenz bei PACT lag der Fokus auf ersten inhaltlichen Recherchen und der Erprobung von Ideen im Raum. Im bereichernden Austausch mit der Dramaturgin Maja Zimmermann, Mina Mahmoudian (Projektleitung Urbane Beziehungen) und Sika Azanledji (Projektleitung WerkStadt) von PACT wurden wesentliche Ansätze für die Umsetzung weiterentwickelt und das Gesamtkonzept des Stücks ausgearbeitet.

›Nanga Kapda‹ (The Naked Cloth) is a research-based performance that focuses on the question of choice and freedom associated with weaving practices and women’s bodies. As a retake on feminist history of »performance as resistance«, ›Nanga Kapda‹ examines the link between movement and the material presence of textiles and their long history of production in India, a work principally done by caste-oppressed women.
