Imagine you find a photo album on the street. You open it and see people you don’t know: holiday pictures, familiar poses and gestures, strangers smiling at you as if you were a relative or close friend rather than just someone peering into their lives by pure chance.

What does it mean to encounter someone who doesn’t really concern you? What is it about the others neutral or dispassionate expression that nevertheless always matters?
