Xavier Le Roy’s two latest works SALUT FÜR CAUDWELL and LE SACRE DU PRINTEMPS investigate the relationships between movement and music in conventional concert and theatrical performances.

SALUT FÜR CAUDWELL

EXTRACT FROM MOUVEMENTS FÜR LACHENMANN. STAGING OF AN EVENING CONCERT

Xavier Le Roy’s Mouvements für Lachenmann, a staged concert of compositions by Helmut Lachenmann including Salut für Caudwell for two guitars, was commissioned by Wien Modern 2005. Here the choreographer takes up on the perceivable gap in Lachenmann’s music between the action producing a sound and the resultant sound. All possible forms of disassociation between what can be seen, heard, or silenced, unfold in a line of flight from a regular concert.

LE SACRE DU PRINTEMPS

Inspired by a clip of Sir Simon Rattle rehearsing with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra in the film Rhythm is it! Xavier Le Roy became interested in Stravinsky’s Le Sacre du Printemps. He studied Rattle’s interpretation comprehensively as though it was an autonomous choreography. In the process cause and effect were reversed: the conductor’s gestures and movements, essentially meant to synchronise the musicians, appear to originate from the music itself.
