What challenges should today’s cultural institutions grapple with? How can they position themselves as emancipatory spaces in a society defined primarily by economic factors? Ayşe Güleç and Bernd Scherer explore these and other questions in conversation with author and critic Esther Boldt.

Ayşe Güleç is a curator, activist researcher, and educator. She works at the intersections of anti-racism, migration, art, and art education. Bernd Scherer has directed Berlin’s Haus der Kulturen der Welt (HKW) since 2006, where his tenure will come to an end in 2022. He has placed the focus of the HKW programme on the examination of transformational social processes, postcolonial structures, and ecological and technological upheavals. Güleç and Scherer both contributed to the book series ›Radical Proximity‹, which was published to mark the 20th anniversary of the PACT Zollverein arts center. ›Radical Proximity‹ comprises interviews conducted by Esther Boldt with inspirational figures from the arts, science, activism, and philosophy. Esther Boldt is the editor of the book series together with PACT Zollverein, Katharina Burkhardt, and Ann-Charlotte Günzel.

The event will take place at the premises of DISTANZ Verlag in Berlin:
