Content Notes

Nudity, Sexual violence

A person wearing a curly, light-colored wig sits on a brown floor, surrounded by several round, shiny objects. The person is dressed in a loose, light garment and holds a long, thin rod with one arm raised. A large, light-colored fur lies beneath them. One foot is extended and bent, while the other arm points upward. The scene is warmly lit and appears theatrically staged.

The word "plot" has different meanings: a story or narrative, a piece of land or property, and the act of scheming or plotting.

In ›A Plot / A Scandal‹, Ligia Lewis engages themes of “scandal” and resistance on the island of Hispaniola and the greater Caribbean and weaves together a series of historical events, political laws, and mythical narratives: From John Locke’s treatise on white man’s ‘natural rights’ to life, liberty, and property to Jose Aponte’s revolutionary plot that led to the slave rebellion in 1812, to Lewis’s great-grandmother, a guiding figure for the community who unfolded alternative forms of resistance such as the Palo dance. Thus, ›A Plot / A Scandal‹ operates as a space of resistance, inviting the scandal of rebellion at the edges of storytelling.

›A Plot / A Scandal‹ was filmed within the medieval town of Santarcangelo di Romagna, Italy.
