As part of the summer festival ›Shifting Grounds – IN COMMON‹, Nadzeya Karakulka creates a dialogue between the unique sound of the cymbal – an instrument full of subtle vibrations, clear resonances, and surprising timbres – and the slag heap.
The internationally renowned cymbalist performs works by Ivano Onavi, whose musical language is characterized by modal structures. The compositions combine a unique sonic aesthetic with rhythmic energy, creating spaces that bridge archaic echoes and contemporary expression. In the process, the cymbal reveals its full versatility: at times delicate and ethereal, at others powerful and dynamic. The individual sounds unfold like trails beneath the open sky, inviting listeners not only to hear the music but also to experience it as atmosphere and movement.

Nadzeya Karakulka is an internationally active cymbalist and music pedagogue. Born in Maladzechna, Belarus, she began playing the Belarusian cymbal at the age of seven. She completed her studies at the Belarusian State Academy of Music in Minsk under Professor Evgeni Gladkov. During this time, she won numerous prizes at national and international competitions and performed as a soloist, including at the Belarusian State Philharmonic. As a musician, she moves between traditional musical language, classical repertoire, and contemporary compositions. She is a member of the artists’ platform Pavetra e.V., which develops interdisciplinary projects and encounters between various art forms.
