Werkstadt
Independent labrotary for ideas and place of gathering
About WerkStadt
WerkStadt in Essen Katernberg was launched by PACT in 2017 as an independent laboratory and place of gathering. Here, residents, local stakeholders and (inter-)national artists work together to explore, question and develop local, regional, national and transnational urban realities and ideas. Within a planned programme, further activities are constantly emerging from the initiative of local people who bring different areas of interest and backgrounds to the table and collaborate with stakeholders from the fields of art, technology and science. Throughout all, WerkStadt remains flexible, constantly questioning, testing and refining its profile.
A site of encounter for everybody
As a space for encounter, a site for exchange and of togetherness, WerkStadt is open to everyone! With its inviting rooms, it regularly reveals its many facets, whether as a cinema, concert stage or lively flea market. From inspiring discussions to relaxing moments and joint activities – WerkStadt offers space for a wide range of activities. Ideas and suggestions from the neighbourhood are always welcome.
Art & Science
WerkStadt also regularly serves as a workspace and presentation venue for artists and researchers. Here, they can work on their projects during extended residencies and/or host exhibitions, performances and collaborative experiments. WerkStadt usually serves as a starting point for exploring Katernberg and the surrounding area.
Workshops
Free workshops are held here regularly. Then, WerkStadt becomes a furniture workshop, bicycle repair shop, sewing workshop, kitchen studio and much more. Experts from a wide variety of fields invite people to come together, try things out and learn new skills.
Talks & Lectures
At WerkStadt, we tackle the questions and challenges we encounter at various levels. In joint events, we explore topics such as our environment, important social issues, and new technologies. We invite guests from the fields of art and culture, science, and activism to contribute their expertise to shaping the future of our living spaces and cities.
