Human, machine, human–machine? When it comes to Grandbrothers, there’s no straight answer to who’s playing the piano. The band's sound is mainly defined by the mix of classical piano playing and a self-developed gadget of electromechanical hammers that knock on various parts of the piano controlled through a software. This approach has remained the same since the day Erol Sarp and Lukas Vogel joined forces to form Grandbrothers while studying at Düsseldorf University. How far can you go using just one instrument? Each and every sound on the internationally acclaimed duo’s albums originates from the concert grand piano that stands in their studio in Bochum.
By forgoing a previously self-set rule to play every single note live on their album ›All the Unknown‹ in 2021, pianist Sarp and producer / electronic engineer Vogel, notably opened new doors to sound manipulation and further refined their already elegantly pure sound through exceptional sampling, mixing and mastering. »More percussive, rhythmic and danceable than ever«, sums up critic Jens Balkenborg. Or, as we say, »the perfect sound for spring«.
