From 2015 to 2017, a wide variety of social and cultural initiatives, groups and institutions invited visitors to enjoy a diverse programme of events in their own premises within the framework of the project ›Katernberg blitzt auf!‹. For seven hours at a time, the whole district of Essen-Katernberg became a venue for events focusing on the diversity of the activities, people and places that make up the community in this district.

Whether it was a tour, an exhibition, a demonstration, an introduction, a ceremony, a games course, a concert, a performance, communal handicrafts, a competition, tea drinking, a short lecture, a song or something else entirely – the audience was invited to discover. The aim was to show residents opportunities for active participation in the neighbourhood and to invite all guests from outside to experience the diversity of the district. The festival took place at various locations in Essen-Katernberg, which could be discovered through a walk or by bike (bikes could be borrowed free of charge) – either on a self-guided tour or along one of the themed routes that had been developed.

Unknown places became accessible, familiar places revealed new talents. The day of the district made it possible to explore a new map of one's own neighbourhood, to roam around and enjoy the late summer warmth.
