Urban Space

In addition to the three regionally and internationally active fields of work ›Stage‹, ›Artists’ Centre‹ and ›PACT·LAB‹, exchange, integration and work in and with the realities and people of the Essen Katernberg neighbourhood are central concerns of PACT. In order to get closer to its residents and stakeholders, the fourth area of activity, ›Urban space‹, was developed on the basis of numerous temporary activities and discussions. It is always oriented towards the needs of the residents and supported by local initiatives from the Zollverein district. Proximity is not only a geographical factor, but also refers to the programme offered primarily at WerkStadt. On this page, you will find an overview of the projects and practices through which PACT reflects its immediate urban embedding and roots in Essen-Katernberg in its work.

Mehrere Menschen draußen vor der WerkStadt. Sie sitzen Holzbänken und Tischen, im Hintergrund ist ein Friseursalon zu erkennen. Werkstadt

WerkStadt is an independent laboratory and place of gathering in Essen-Katernberg. Since 2017, residents, local stakeholders and artists have been working together there to research, question and develop local, regional, national and transnational urban realities and ideas.

PACT Café

Since 2016, PACT has been inviting families and children of all ages to the ›PACT Café‹ once a week: every Wednesday afternoon, the foyer in the former pithead bath at Zollverein becomes a meeting place.
