Neue Musik

Ensemble Musikfabrik Dirk Rothbrust

1 / 4 Janet Sinica

This summer, our longstanding collaborators, Ensemble Musikfabrik, were set to play the work ›Alfabet‹, among others, at no less a venue than the Centre Pompidou in Paris as part of the international festival Manifeste. Now, for PACT’s first live public event since the outbreak of the Corona crisis, Ensemble Musikfabrik make a most welcome return to us with a special programme that also includes Mikel Urquiza's virtuoso work.

»Terms such as 'variability', 'sound sensitivity' or even 'perfection' hardly do justice to the incredible musicality of this quartet,« was the euphoric reaction of the neue musikzeitung (nmz) to the world premiere of ›Alfabet‹ at the Wittener Tage für Neue Kammermusik in 2019.

Now ›Alfabet‹, which is based on texts by the Danish writer Inger Christensen, can be experienced at PACT as part of a diverse programme of chamber music for electronic percussion and keyboard instruments that reveals many fascinating, at times bizarre, facets of the musical relationship between freedom and structure.

›Alfabet‹ is followed by Steffen Krebber's composition ›Amphiference‹, a neologism that describes a »mutual, merging calling« (Krebber). For Moog synthesizer, drum set and two loudspeakers, ›Amphiference‹, is an ecstatic, extremely physical piece in which the instruments electronically filter each other so as to sound and resonate simultaneously.

The programme culminates in ›KONTAKTE‹, one of Karlheinz Stockhausen's major ground breaking works and the first trio in music history for percussion, piano and tape. In ›KONTAKTE‹ (1958-60), Stockhausen creates a completely new universe of sounds, frequencies, tones and structures from a simple impulse, thus realizing his ideal of a music in which acoustic and electronic sound production can no longer be clearly separated.
