Phia Ménard / Compagnie Non Nova

Phia Ménard began her artistic career as a circus artist. Since she founded the company Non Nova in 1998, she has focused on making multidisciplinary shows that blur the lines between dance, theatre, circus and performance art and critically examine notions of normativity and anomaly. Ménard’s gender transition in 2008 led to a redefinition of her theatrical language as reflected in her works ›I.C.E.‹ (2008) and ›P.P.P.‹ (2008) which emphasize impermanence and involve encounters of the artist’s body with raw materials in a state of transformation.

Ménard realized ›L’après-midi d’un foehn version 1‹ (2008), ›L’après-midi d’un foehn‹ (2011) and ›Vortex‹ (2011) as part of her series ›The Wind Cycle‹, dealing with the invisible element of air.

Her further works include ›Belle d’Hier‹ (2015), ›Les Os Noirs‹ (2016), ›Saison Sèche‹ (2018), and ›Et in Arcadia Ego‹ (2018) created for the Opéra-Comique in Paris. In 2017, her performance ›Immoral Tales—Part 1—The Mother House‹ (2017) premiered at documenta 14 in Kassel.

In 2014 Phia Ménard received the insignia ›Chevalier de l‘Ordre des Arts et des Lettres‹ (›Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters‹ from the French Minister of Culture and Communication.
