The Alexander Technique and dance
Many artists – actors, musicians as well as dancers, – have found the Alexander Technique to be a powerful way to enhance performance.

The directives of the Alexander Technique can be applied to everything that happens in daily life, in training, in rehearsal situations and performances. To think of simultaneously lengthening and widening the torso and freeing all the joints of the head, arms and legs while executing extreme movement sequences, demands considerable practice as well as the ability to observe and be observed at the same time.

Through studying the Alexander Technique, dancers can move with greater ease, poise, and accomplishment, regardless of the movement style.  The student does not learn any ›new‹ movement, or do any ›exercises‹- rather they learn how to facilitate current movement skills and assist the learning of new movement skills. This means that the Technique, once learnt, can be practiced during regular dance classes. The Technique helps dancers be simultaneously aware of themselves and their surroundings: space, sound, other dancers and the audience. With this double consciousness, dancers don’t loose themselves completely in a movement. They create a distance between themselves and the movement, a space where their personal movement is absolutely free. When this happens, something entirely new can unfold.
