We are pleased to announce that as well as modern classes we will then also be offering regular complementary classes in GYROKINESIS®, the Alexander Technique and Yoga. For more details please see the monthly class schedules.
Alexander technique
Many artists – actors, musicians as well as dancers, – have found the Alexander Technique to be a powerful way to enhance performance. The directives of the Alexander Technique can be applied to everything that happens in daily life, in training, in rehearsal situations and performances. To think of simultaneously lengthening and widening the torso and freeing all the joints of the head, arms and legs while executing extreme movement sequences, demands considerable practice as well as the ability to observe and be observed at the same time.
Through studying the Alexander Technique, dancers can move with greater ease, poise, and accomplishment, regardless of the movement style. The student does not learn any ›new‹ movement, or do any ›exercises‹- rather they learn how to facilitate current movement skills and assist the learning of new movement skills. This means that the Technique, once learnt, can be practiced during regular dance classes. The Technique helps dancers be simultaneously aware of themselves and their surroundings: space, sound, other dancers and the audience. With this double consciousness, dancers don’t loose themselves completely in a movement. They create a distance between themselves and the movement, a space where their personal movement is absolutely free. When this happens, something entirely new can unfold.
Gyrokenesis
GYROKINESIS® is the origin of the GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM®. The exercises integrate principles keys of yoga, tai chi, dance and swimming while being an original system. The body is stimulated and worked gradually through fluid repetitious movements. Each exercise series individually progresses in range of movement, intensity and speed. Specific breathing patterns for each exercise open up energy pathways, oxygenate the blood and in every movement stimulate the nervous system. Circularity of the movements continuously transfers the effort from the agonist to the antagonist muscle groups and vice versa, this is coupled with active elongation of the muscles and precise directing of the force through the bone structure.
Sitting on a stool, the senses are awakened through self-massage, the nervous system is stimulated through breathing. This is followed by rhythmical spinal/pelvic/head spiraling, rippling, undulating movements in all possible planes of motion. Once the spine and the nervous system are prepared to support the movement of the limbs, circular arm and leg movements are integrated. As muscle tone and total body awareness increases more advanced exercises are performed on the floor and standing. GYROKINESIS® organically rejuvenates your body and mind, bringing vitality and vigour to your life.
